When BMW presented the R 80 G/S in 1980, it effectively created a new category of motorcycle. The letters stand for Gelände and Straße, off-road and road, and the idea of a large-capacity twin that could cross continents on tarmac and gravel alike proved a revelation. The G/S was the first production BMW motorcycle with the Monolever single-sided swingarm, which combined shaft drive with a light and robust rear suspension layout, and it was noticeably lighter and more agile than the touring boxers of the day.
Its credibility was sealed in the desert. Works machines derived from the G/S won the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1981 and 1983 with Hubert Auriol, and again in 1984 and 1985 with Gaston Rahier, turning the model into a legend almost overnight. Every BMW GS that has followed, up to the adventure bikes that dominate the market today, traces its lineage directly back to this machine. Early G/S models are now highly sought after by collectors and riders who appreciate their simplicity, torquey character and historic significance, and this restored example offers a fine opportunity to own the original.
