The private seller offers for sale this 1953 NSU Max, powered by a 247 cc single-cylinder engine. Finished in deep black with fine gold pinstriping on the tank, fenders and side covers, and wearing the classic blue and white NSU tank emblems, this example captures the elegant post-war German style that made the Max so popular in its day. The odometer shows 29,800 km, and according to the seller the engine was completely overhauled in 2025, making this an attractive proposition for anyone looking to enjoy a classic motorcycle on the road. Characteristic features include the pressed-steel frame, the leading-link front fork, the generously valanced fenders, full-width hubs with spoked wheels, the enclosed chain case and a chrome rear luggage rack behind the sprung solo saddle. Turn indicators have been fitted for added visibility in modern traffic. The motorcycle presents in good condition in the photographs.
NSU of Neckarsulm was one of the largest motorcycle manufacturers in the world in the early 1950s, and the Max, launched in 1952, was its technical masterpiece. Designed by Albert Roder, its 247 cc single used the ingenious Ultramax valve gear, in which the overhead camshaft was driven by connecting rods running in a tube alongside the cylinder rather than by a chain or shaft. This gave the engine an advanced overhead cam layout with the robustness of a much simpler design and a free-revving character that set it apart from its rivals. Racing versions derived from the Max dominated the 250 cc class, and NSU machines secured world championships and speed records that made the brand a household name across Europe. The road-going Max evolved into the Spezialmax and later the Supermax, but the early Max remains the purest form of the design. Today it is cherished by collectors as a beautifully engineered and highly usable classic, combining distinctive German engineering with an unmistakable 1950s silhouette.
