The seller offers for sale this 1973 Datsun 240Z, powered by a 2.4-litre L24 inline-six engine, paired with an automatic transmission. This is a genuine US-market example that has come directly from California and has not yet been imported into Europe. It is offered as a restoration project: the seller states that the bodywork has remained unchanged on the outside since purchase, and the accompanying photographs were taken at the time of acquisition. The engine block and transmission have been removed from the car, but both belong to the vehicle and are included in the sale. The exhaust has been removed due to corrosion.
Some initial work towards the restoration has already been carried out. According to the seller, the engine block and a number of components have been cleaned up, a new battery has been fitted, the oil filter, spark plugs have been replaced, and the tailgate lock has been repaired with a new key made. A quantity of new, unused replacement parts is included with the car, comprising a thermostat, a chrome OE-look door mirror, a carburettor fuel filter, an SU carburettor air filter set, a K&N valve cover breather/PCV, and a premium engine gasket set, all specified for the 240Z and related models. The documentation package includes the California title certificate, previous purchase documents, transport paperwork, the owner’s manual and the original L20a/L24 service manual, with a digital version available on request.
The Datsun 240Z was introduced for the 1970 model year as the export version of the Nissan S30, sold in Japan as the Fairlady Z. Designed by a team led by Yoshihiko Matsuo and championed in the United States by Yutaka Katayama, the 240Z brought a smooth overhead-camshaft straight-six, four-wheel independent suspension and front disc brakes to a two-seat coupe at a price that undercut its European rivals. Its long-bonnet, short-deck silhouette drew clear inspiration from the Jaguar E-Type, and its blend of style, performance and value made it an immediate international success, with works cars taking overall victory in the Safari Rally in 1971 and 1973.
Today the first-generation 240Z is firmly established as a sought-after classic, prized for its timeless Matsuo-penned lines, its characterful L-series six and its important place in the history of the Japanese sports car. This particular car, a left-hand-drive California example retaining its original bodywork and accompanied by its engine, gearbox, a set of new parts and a comprehensive documentation file, represents an appealing starting point for an enthusiast looking to take on a rewarding S30 restoration.
