The seller offers for sale this 1981 Mitsubishi Celeste 1600 ST, powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 73 hp, paired with a manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Finished in its original Silver Metallic paint, this Celeste was originally delivered new in the Netherlands and has covered 98,248 km. The bodywork retains the model’s characteristic fastback-coupe lines and panel fit, with any light age-related wear in keeping with a car of this era, while the interior presents tidily and still carries the atmosphere of its early-1980s cabin, with dashboard, instruments and upholstery forming an original, coherent whole. The car holds a valid Dutch APK roadworthiness inspection through 2027.
Introduced in February 1975 as the hatchback-coupe companion to the Mitsubishi Lancer saloon, the Celeste shared its platform and 2,340 mm wheelbase with the Lancer while wrapping it in a lower, sportier fastback body. Depending on the export market, the same car was sold under a variety of names, including Plymouth Arrow in the United States, Dodge Arrow in Canada and Chrysler Lancer in Australia, reflecting how widely Mitsubishi’s Lancer platform was distributed through partner brands during this period. Production of the Celeste ran until July 1981, when it was replaced by the front-wheel-drive Cordia, making later cars such as this one among the last of the rear-wheel-drive line.
Under the bonnet, the 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine drives the rear wheels through a manual gearbox, giving the Celeste a classic, lightweight sports-coupe driving character quite different from the front-wheel-drive coupes that followed it. Combined with its low kerb weight and period-correct proportions, the Celeste offers an engaging, old-school driving experience, while today its rarity, particularly in original, Dutch-delivered specification, makes it a distinctive choice among Japanese classics on the European market.
