Condor, based in Courfaivre in the Swiss Jura, began building motorcycles in 1901 and became the principal supplier of two-wheelers to the Swiss Army. The A580 was the first model powered entirely by Condor’s own engine, a low-compression side-valve flat-twin of 577 cc inspired by the boxer layouts of BMW and Zündapp, chosen for its smoothness, reliability and ability to run on virtually any grade of fuel. Built primarily for the Swiss Army and police, the A580 featured shaft final drive, a four-speed gearbox with high and low ratios giving eight speeds in total, and enclosed electrics and carburettor to cope with alpine conditions. Robustly engineered and famously dependable, the model remained in military service for decades, and today the A580 is a sought-after collector’s item that embodies Swiss precision engineering and post-war motorcycling heritage.
