The seller offers for sale this 1991 Peugeot 405 1.9 GRi 4×4, powered by a 1.9-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Showing approximately 65,000 km, this is the desirable 4×4 version that sat at the top of the 405 range at the time. Finished in red, the car is described by the seller as completely original and has been mostly stored in a dry garage with only occasional outings. It comes with two original keys and retains its original components, including the catalytic converter, filters and exhaust, preserving its authenticity.
The Peugeot 405 was launched in 1987 and was named European Car of the Year in 1988, going on to become one of the most successful saloons of its generation. Praised for its sharp Pininfarina-influenced styling, fine handling and well-judged engineering, the 405 was sold around the world and enjoyed considerable competition success, most famously in rallying and on the Paris-Dakar. The 1.9 GRi 4×4 was a special and technically sophisticated version, featuring permanent four-wheel drive with a viscous central differential and a Torsen rear differential, along with rear hydraulic suspension. It represented the most advanced and best-equipped point of the 405 saloon range.
This particular car combines that rare four-wheel-drive driveline with the willing 1.9-litre engine and a five-speed manual gearbox, supported by ventilated front disc brakes and solid rear discs. The seller notes that the car has been carefully serviced, with oils and filters replaced using original parts, and that a recent extensive service was carried out. As the car is seldom driven, the seller advises a deeper inspection of the specialised systems such as the central differential and the hydraulic suspension. The interior retains its original upholstery, headliner and trim, along with central locking, electric windows and the original period Blaupunkt radio, with only the dashboard top requiring replacement of a cracked piece that is common to these models, for which a part is being sourced.
Originally purchased new by a Portuguese emigrant in Switzerland and brought to Portugal in 2002 by the same first owner, the car was kept by that owner for around 30 years. Its certification by the Caramulo Museum, a FIVA member, as a Vehicle of Historical Interest until 2029 underlines its standing within the classic car community. As a rare and technically interesting top-specification 405, this 4×4 offers genuine appeal to collectors and enthusiasts of modern classics.
