The seller offers for sale this 1996 Yamaha XJ600S Diversion, powered by a 599 cc air-cooled inline-four, paired with a six-speed gearbox. It is finished in yellow, the colour that suits the Diversion’s rounded half fairing better than any other, and is fitted with a top case, a 12 volt socket and a ball mount for a satellite navigation unit. The seller reports that the machine was serviced on 15 July 2026, that a new battery was fitted, that the carburettors were cleaned and that it wears a new set of Bridgestone BT46 tyres.

The XJ600S arrived in 1992 and quietly became one of Yamaha’s most successful middleweights in Europe. Where its rivals chased peak power, the Diversion took the opposite view: an air-cooled transverse four with two valves per cylinder and four Mikuni carburettors, 61 hp at 8,500 rpm, a six-speed gearbox and chain final drive, wrapped in a half fairing that gave real weather protection and an upright riding position that suited both the commute and the long weekend. It was the bike a great many riders in the 1990s learned on, toured on and kept far longer than they intended, and Yamaha kept building it into the following decade.

That reputation is exactly what makes a tidy Diversion worth looking at now. The air-cooled XJ engine is a straightforward, unstressed design, the running gear is uncomplicated and parts remain easy to come by. This example carries a low indicated distance, recent service work and the touring accessories already in place, which makes it a thoroughly usable proposition today.
