The Universal A1000 represents a fascinating chapter in Swiss motorcycle manufacturing, produced by Universal A.-G. of Oberrieden during the 1940s. From 1936 the company developed its own side-valve engines in 680 and 986 cc capacities, and the A1000 was tailored to the needs of the Swiss Army, serving in a role comparable to the military combinations of the era. Its 50-degree side-valve V-twin displaces 986 cc and produced around 25 horsepower, driving through a hand-shifted four-speed Condor gearbox to a chain-driven rear wheel. The front wheel was guided by a trapezoidal fork while the rigid rear frame left the back wheel undamped, and the left-mounted sidecar was suspended on twin coil springs, with three 200 mm drum brakes providing the stopping power. As the largest series-production motorcycle ever built in Switzerland, and with only around 200 examples believed to have been made, the Universal A1000 is a rare and historically significant machine that appeals strongly to collectors of military and pre-war motorcycles as well as enthusiasts of Swiss engineering heritage.
