The seller offers for sale this 1987 Steyr 1491, a remarkable historic truck with a unique background and extensive conversion for motorhome use. This vehicle is powered by a 9.7-liter six-cylinder diesel engine paired with a manual transmission. According to the seller, the truck originally served as a broadcast vehicle for the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) where it functioned as a mobile transmission unit for radio productions and events. Later the vehicle was used by the band “Freiheit” as a tour bus before being converted and officially registered as a motorhome. After acquisition by the current owner the vehicle underwent significant technical refurbishment including an overhaul of the rear axle suspension, sandblasting and repainting of the main chassis, replacement of pneumatic lines, new electrical wiring, new air tanks and the installation of new tyres. The fuel injection pump and injectors were also serviced. The bodywork shows some scratches and signs of age with minor damage on the front bumper. Rust is present on parts of the underside and the frame may require attention.
The living compartment was rebuilt and equipped with modern motorhome features, creating a functional interior suitable for travel and extended stays. The vehicle offers eight registered seats and sleeping accommodation for seven people. It includes a kitchen unit, refrigerator, shower, toilet, boiler and multiple water tanks including a 400-liter fresh water tank. The electrical system features a 3000-watt inverter and a roof-mounted photovoltaic panel, allowing independent power supply while traveling. Additional equipment includes a diesel parking heater, rear tail lift, reversing camera, exterior lighting and an awning sunshade.
The Steyr 1491 represents the robust engineering tradition of Austrian commercial vehicles. Steyr trucks have long been known for their durability and strong off-road and long-distance capabilities. Vehicles of this type were widely used across Europe in logistics, construction and specialized applications. Because of their strong chassis construction and dependable diesel engines, many examples have later been converted for expedition travel, mobile workshops or motorhome projects. This particular vehicle stands out thanks to its unusual history as a broadcast truck and tour bus before becoming a motorhome, making it an interesting vehicle for collectors, travelers or those seeking a distinctive expedition vehicle.
