Introduced in 1936, the Simca 5 was the product of a close collaboration between Fiat and the newly founded French manufacturer Simca, being built in Nanterre under licence from Fiat as a French-market version of the Fiat 500 “Topolino”. In fact, the Simca 5 was presented to the public some three months before its Italian sibling, making it in some respects the first of the two into production. With its tiny four-cylinder engine, independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes on all four wheels, the Simca 5 was a remarkably advanced small car for its era, and its friendly, rounded styling has made it a firm favourite among pre-war and immediate post-war microcar enthusiasts ever since.
