The seller offers for sale this 1986 Renault Espace, a MPV version equipped with a 4-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine and manual gearbox. This example is privately maintained and represents the first generation Espace J11, originally conceived by Matra and brought to market by Renault as one of the earliest MPVs. The body is made entirely of polyester and was resprayed in blue several years ago, with normal user traces visible. The interior features two leather front seats with armrests that can rotate, and five individual rear fabric seats that can be folded or removed separately. The headliner has been replaced and the pillar trims have been reupholstered. Gauges and electronics function properly. The timing belt was recently replaced at 297.000 km.
The current documented mileage is 304.000 km and it holds a valid technical inspection.
The Renault Espace was a groundbreaking model when introduced in the 1980s, effectively creating the European MPV segment. Its innovative layout, high seating position, and modular interior made it a practical and forward-thinking family vehicle. Designed with space and versatility in mind, the Espace combined passenger comfort with utility in a way few vehicles had done before. The lightweight construction and front-wheel-drive platform contributed to balanced driving characteristics, while the airy cabin and large glass surfaces enhanced visibility and comfort. Today, early Espaces are becoming rare sights on the road, appreciated by enthusiasts for their historical importance and distinctive design. As one of the pioneers of the multi-purpose vehicle concept in Europe, the first-generation Espace holds a special place in automotive history.
