The seller offers for sale this 1953 NSU Max Spezial, powered by a 250 cc single-cylinder engine. Showing 37,500 km on the odometer, this example has been kept in private hands and, according to the seller, has undergone restoration work, with the fuel tank sealed as part of that effort. A sport silencer has been fitted along with a gel battery, the latter a practical concession to modern use on a machine of this age. Visually the bike presents the unmistakable NSU signature of the period: the pressed-steel frame with its deep, flowing central spine, the enclosed bodywork sweeping from the headstock back to the tail, the valanced front mudguard riding above the leading-link forks, and the sprung solo saddle set into that distinctive silhouette. The paintwork shows only minor chips or scratches, and the motorcycle is presented in good condition throughout, making it a rewarding candidate for classic runs, club events or simply for display among a collection of German post-war machinery.
The NSU Max stands as one of the most technically ambitious motorcycles built in Germany during the fifties, and it emerged at the moment when NSU was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. Its defining feature is the Ultramax drive, an ingenious overhead camshaft system operated not by chain or gears but by long connecting rods housed in an enclosed tunnel on the right-hand side of the cylinder, a solution devised by Albert Roder that gave the engine exceptional reliability alongside a level of sophistication unheard of in a 250 of the era. Around that engine NSU built a pressed-steel monocoque frame, a design approach that lent the machine its remarkably modern, integrated appearance and considerable rigidity for the time. The Spezialmax variant sat above the standard model with higher output and improved specification, and the family as a whole earned its reputation on the road and in competition, with NSU dominating quarter-litre racing in the mid-fifties. For collectors of post-war European motorcycling, the Max remains a landmark machine, admired equally for its engineering originality and for the sculptural confidence of its design.
