The seller offers for sale this 1966 MZ ES 250/1, powered by a 250 cc single-cylinder engine. Finished in black with a striking red sidecar, this MZ is presented as a complete sidecar combination, a so-called Gespann, that was supplied new with its sidecar by the East German manufacturer. The odometer indicates 26,000 km. According to the seller the motorcycle was delivered new in Germany and was purchased by the current owner in Munich in 1995, remaining in the same ownership ever since. It was used purely for leisure rides on summer days, covering around 500 kilometres each year up to 2021, after which it has been largely at rest. The seller indicates that the machine has stood still for almost two years, so a minor inspection and recommissioning service would be advisable before regular use. The motorcycle retains numerous original MZ details that remain in good condition, and the sidecar itself is also presented in good condition, with its bright red bodywork, chrome fittings and period detailing giving the whole combination a charming and authentic appearance.
The MZ ES 250/1 was produced in the 1960s by Motorradwerk Zschopau, the renowned East German marque whose roots reach back to the legendary DKW factory. Powered by a robust two-stroke single-cylinder engine, the ES series became famous for its durability, its long-travel suspension and its distinctive full-width headlamp nacelle, earning a reputation as one of the most dependable touring motorcycles to come out of the former East Germany. MZ machines were engineered for hard everyday use and long distances, and the factory’s competition successes in the International Six Days Trial only added to the model’s standing among riders. Fitted with a sidecar, the ES 250/1 represents a quintessential slice of 1960s motorcycling, a practical and characterful combination that today is increasingly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate original, unspoilt examples of classic German two-stroke engineering and the nostalgic appeal of the traditional Gespann.
