Introduced in 1968, the W109 range topped Mercedes-Benz’s saloon line-up and introduced buyers to the marque’s self-levelling air suspension, a novel feature for the era that gave the big saloon a supremely composed ride. The 300 SEL, fitted with the 3.5-litre V8, combined the model’s stately proportions with a smooth and effortless drivetrain, and the range as a whole cemented Mercedes-Benz’s reputation for building some of the most refined and technically advanced saloons of its time.
Beneath its formal styling, the W109 offered genuine engineering sophistication for the period, including its four-wheel independent suspension and, on air-sprung models, self-levelling at the rear.
