The seller offers for sale this 1960 Mercedes-Benz 180 B, powered by a 1.9-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Finished in black with a striking red interior, this elegant four-door sedan represents one of the most charismatic saloons of the Ponton generation. The car was kept by the same owner from 1976 and was always garage stored, and it is offered today with its original owner’s handbook containing the factory maintenance instructions.
Between 2012 and 2013 the car was restored, with the work carried out at a documented cost of approximately SEK 262,000. The programme included a complete repaint inside and out, finished with two coats of clear lacquer, and refurbished stainless steel bumpers. The interior was completely renewed, with new upholstery and carpets in both the cabin and the luggage compartment, along with additional floor sound insulation. The front and rear suspension was dismantled and rebuilt with new bushings and fitted with new shock absorbers. A comprehensive brake overhaul was carried out, including new wheel cylinders, brake hoses and pipes, a rebuilt master cylinder and blasted brake drums, and a new right-hand steering joint was fitted. The engine was serviced with a new water pump, cylinder head gasket set, new air, oil and fuel filters, ignition leads, drive belts and condenser. The driveline received attention as well, with a new flex disc, a replacement universal joint on the propeller shaft, and a new rear exhaust system and silencer. The car passed its most recent roadworthiness inspection in March 2026 without remarks.
The Mercedes-Benz 180 was introduced in 1953 and marked an important step forward for the marque, being the first Mercedes-Benz passenger car to use a modern unibody construction with a separate front subframe. Its three-box styling earned it the enduring “Ponton” nickname, a reference to the smooth, full-width bodywork that replaced the separate front wings of pre-war design. The 180 B arrived in 1959 as an updated version of the series, offering a refined and comfortable saloon that combined durable engineering with understated elegance. Models from this era are widely appreciated today for their solid build quality, timeless proportions and their role in re-establishing Mercedes-Benz as a maker of dependable and dignified motor cars.
Behind its restrained exterior, the 180 B offers the relaxed and reassuring character that defined Mercedes-Benz saloons of the period. The four-cylinder engine and manual gearbox make for straightforward and honest motoring, while the generous cabin and comfortable seating suit both touring and show use. For collectors and enthusiasts drawn to the classic Ponton silhouette, this well-documented example presents an appealing opportunity to own an elegant piece of Mercedes-Benz history.
