The seller offers for sale this 1957 Jaguar XK140 Drophead Coupé, powered by a 3.4-litre inline six-cylinder engine, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. This left-hand drive example is finished in dark blue with a matching dark blue hood and a grey leather interior, and it rides on wire wheels with chromed spinners. The car has been restored, and the work included a rebuild of the engine, a completely new leather interior and re-chroming of the brightwork. A stainless steel exhaust system has also been fitted, and the car comes with five new wire wheels fitted with new tyres, including the spare in the boot.
Inside, the Drophead Coupé offers the most luxurious XK140 cabin, with a polished burr walnut dashboard and door cappings, a full set of Smiths instruments, the large four-spoke steering wheel with its Jaguar centre boss, grey leather seats and grey carpets. The fully lined folding hood with its glass rear window gives the car the comfort of a closed car when raised and an elegant open profile when lowered. The XK140 was introduced in October 1954 as the successor to the sensational XK120, the car that had made Jaguar a household name after its debut at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show. Jaguar used the experience gained with its C-type racing cars, which had won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1951 and 1953, to refine the formula, and the XK140 proudly carries a badge celebrating those victories. The engine was moved forward to create more cabin space, rack-and-pinion steering was adopted, stronger bumpers and a new cast grille were fitted, and the standard power output increased to around 190 bhp. The XK140 was offered as an Open Two Seater, a Fixed Head Coupé and a Drophead Coupé, and remained in production until early 1957, when it made way for the XK150. Relatively few Drophead Coupés were built, which makes them highly sought after today.
At the heart of every XK140 lies the celebrated XK twin overhead camshaft straight six, an engine that went on to power Jaguars for almost four decades and to win at Le Mans. It combines strong torque with a smooth and eager character and a wonderful sound. Paired with the flowing lines of Jaguar’s classic XK design, the long bonnet, the curvaceous wings and the elegant tail, the result is one of the most desirable British sports cars of the 1950s.
