Introduced by Innocenti under De Tomaso ownership in 1976, the Mini De Tomaso used Bertone’s distinctive wedge-shaped restyle of the Mini theme, topping the existing 90 and 120 range as the sporting flagship of the line. It was distinguished from its siblings by wide, matt-black plastic bumpers front and rear, integrated foglights, a bonnet scoop and flared wheelarches to cover its wider alloy wheels, giving it a purposeful stance quite unlike the original British Mini. Under the skin it carried BMC’s proven 1275cc A-series four-cylinder engine, good for around 70 hp, making it a genuine rival to contemporaries such as the Mini 1275GT, Peugeot 104 ZS and Autobianchi A112 Abarth. Production continued into the early 1980s, when the model was eventually succeeded by a turbocharged, Daihatsu-powered version.
Underneath the Bertone bodywork, the Mini De Tomaso retains the transverse-engined, front-wheel-drive Mini layout, giving it the same nimble, go-kart-like handling the platform is celebrated for, while the A-series engine and 4-speed gearbox provide a lively, characterful driving experience.
