– Wiring and parts replaced or restored

The private seller offers for sale this 1957 Harley-Davidson FLH Hydra-Glide, powered by a 1,600 cc Shovelhead V-twin engine, paired with its original 1957 gearbox. The FLH Hydra-Glide took its name from the hydraulically damped telescopic front fork that Harley-Davidson introduced in 1949, replacing the earlier springer fork. The fork was a genuine step forward in comfort, and together with the rigid rear end of the era it gave the big twin the look that remains a reference point for American motorcycling to this day.

This example is a personal and very individual build. According to the seller, it was originally planned for quarter-mile racing, which never happened. The seller states that the motorcycle has been restored, with all wiring and parts either replaced or restored. The original Panhead engine has been replaced by a Shovelhead from 1966, which has been stroked from 1,200 cc to 1,600 cc. The gearbox and the crankcase are still from 1957, although the seller reports that the internals have been tuned.

The result is a stripped-back, raw-metal bobber with a bare tank, a solo seat, spoked wheels and exposed mechanicals, a machine that will appeal to those who value period-correct Harley-Davidson running gear combined with a more powerful, modified heart. A distinctive project for the collector who prefers a motorcycle with a story of its own.
