The seller offers for sale this 1958 Csepel 125, powered by a 125 cc single-cylinder petrol engine. This example presents in good condition throughout, with tidy black paintwork and classic 1950s lines, and shows 5000 km on the odometer, as stated by the seller. It represents a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Hungarian motorcycling history that is seldom seen outside its home country, and it comes with Hungarian registration.
The Csepel name traces back to the Manfréd Weiss Steel and Metal Works, founded in 1911 by the industrialist Baron Manfréd Weiss on Csepel Island near Budapest. The company grew rapidly into one of the largest industrial enterprises of Austria-Hungary, and from 1939 it produced motorcycles in large numbers, beginning with a 100 cc model and followed by 125 cc and 250 cc machines carrying the Csepel name. The factory was destroyed during the Second World War, but production resumed after 1947 under state ownership, initially with a 100 cc model.
From 1954 the works’ 250 cc machines were sold under the Pannonia name, while the 125 cc model offered here continued under the Csepel badge as the factory was reorganised as the Danuvia machine tool works. The scale of the operation was remarkable: in 1960 the factory celebrated the delivery of its one millionth motorcycle. Csepel machines were exported to many countries around the world and even gained a foothold on the American market under the White Motorcycles brand. Today these honest, simple single-cylinder machines are prized by collectors of Eastern European motorcycles, and this example offers charming period character combined with straightforward mechanicals.
