The private seller offers for sale this 1973 BMW 2002 Automatic, powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with an automatic transmission. The BMW 2002 is the car that established BMW’s reputation for sporting compact saloons. Launched in 1968 as a 1602 fitted with the 2.0-litre M10 engine, it combined a light, agile body with a willing four-cylinder unit and went on to become the foundation of the later 3 Series. The 2002 became a favourite with enthusiasts and remains one of the most sought-after classic BMWs.
This example is finished in Sahara beige and was first registered in the Netherlands on 3 January 1973. According to the seller it was discovered in the Netherlands after long-term single ownership and indoor storage, having reportedly been unused since 1989, and it was acquired in 2020. An extensive restoration followed, which the seller says is carefully documented. The original intention was to conserve the car, but dismantling revealed corrosion that required structural repairs, including the lower right-hand section of the boot floor, the sills and the lower rear wheel-arch sections. The original body shell was preserved wherever possible, and the body was refinished in its Sahara colour and protected with a ceramic coating.
The mechanical restoration included a complete engine overhaul, renewal of service components and rebuilding of mechanical systems. Underbody components were restored and powder-coated where appropriate. In contrast to the restored exterior and mechanical parts, the original interior was cleaned and conserved rather than retrimmed, so the tan seats and door panels keep their period character. The seller states that an extensive photographic and video record documents the discovery and restoration, and that supporting material includes period documentation, the service book, the owner’s manual and invoices. Further restoration material is available on request.
The seller reports that the car has not been driven on public roads since the restoration was completed. The vehicle is located in Bucharest, Romania, and retains its Dutch registration and export documentation. It has not been registered in Romania and does not currently have a valid APK or roadworthiness inspection. At the buyer’s request and at an additional cost, the seller can arrange registration in Romania and obtain a valid Romanian technical inspection (ITP).
