The private seller offers for sale this 1971 Robur LO 1801 A, powered by a 3345 cc four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a manual transmission. Robur trucks from the former East Germany have a look all of their own: a compact, upright cab, a short wheelbase and a tall, boxy body that is unmistakably utilitarian. This LO 1801 A carries a closed box body and sits on chunky off-road tyres.

The Robur was built by VEB Robur-Werke in Zittau and was a common sight in East German industry, the emergency services and the army. The LO series of light trucks was developed for hard use, and the all-wheel-drive variants were valued for their ability to carry a full load across rough terrain. The box body on this example is a communications-style shelter, and the seller notes that it can be unfolded to a width of approximately six metres, creating a remarkable amount of space once parked up.

The photographs show the truck in an attractive green finish, with the open rear doors revealing a fitted interior, a cab with green seats and a period instrument panel, and the compact running gear underneath. It has also appeared at vehicle shows, as some of the pictures illustrate.

For collectors of military and Eastern Bloc vehicles, a Robur like this is a rare and endearing piece, equally suited to events, camping and displays. It is a vehicle that will start conversations at any gathering.
