Moretti was founded in Turin by Giovanni Moretti in 1925 and built motorcycles and complete cars of its own design before turning, in the sixties, to elegant special bodies based on Fiat mechanicals. Those cars filled niches that Fiat’s mass production could not, and they were sold through Fiat’s dealer network. The 850 Sportiva was presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1965 and was styled by Dany Brawand. Its flowing lines, with pronounced wing crests and a low, sweeping roof, drew inspiration from the Dino design language of the time, which is why the car is often described as a miniature Dino. Only a few hundred were built and far fewer survive today.
Underneath the hand-finished body sits the proven running gear of the Fiat 850, with its compact four-cylinder engine mounted in the rear. The car is remarkably low and compact, which gives it a nimble, go-kart character on the road, while the rich interior trim gave buyers a sense of occasion that a standard Fiat could not. Today the Moretti 850 Sportiva is a sought-after collector’s car and a regular guest at Italian classic car events, and complete, original examples such as this one rarely come to market.
