Introduced in 1950 as the successor to the MG TC, the MG TD Midget combined the traditional looks of the T-series sports cars with a modernised chassis borrowed from the MG Y-type saloon, giving it independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering for improved ride and handling compared with its predecessor. The TD was produced predominantly for export, and the vast majority of the roughly 29,000 cars built were shipped left-hand drive to the United States, where the model played an important part in introducing American buyers to the European sports car. Production continued until 1953, when the TD was succeeded by the MG TF.
Underneath its traditional coachbuilt-look bodywork the TD uses a simple separate chassis and the well-proven XPAG 1250cc engine also fitted to the MG Y-type, offering modest but usable performance combined with straightforward, easy-to-maintain mechanicals. Its light weight, direct steering and compact dimensions have long made the TD a popular choice for owners wanting an accessible, characterful entry into pre-war-style British sports car motoring, as well as a regular sight at classic car rallies and touring events.
