The 250 CE belongs to Mercedes-Benz’s W114/W115 range, nicknamed the “Strich-Acht” or “Stroke Eight” after the “/8” date code on its identification plate, which marked it as the company’s all-new “New Generation” mid-size range when it launched in 1968, styled under long-serving chief designer Paul Bracq. From mid-1969, a pillarless two-door coupé joined the range, distinguished by a lower roofline, a longer boot lid and frameless door glass that let every window drop fully, giving an open-air feel despite the fixed roof. Unlike the four-cylinder saloons, every coupé used six-cylinder power, reflecting its more upmarket position within the range. The 250 CE took its name from the 2.5-litre M114 engine and its “Einspritzung”, or fuel injection: a Bosch D-Jetronic system that marked the first time Mercedes-Benz had offered electronic fuel injection in a production car, producing around 150 hp. It offered a considerably more accessible route to a pillarless Mercedes coupé than the far costlier, hand-finished W111 models it effectively replaced in the range. Only around 67,000 coupés were built between 1969 and 1976, against almost 1.9 million saloons, and of those, some 21,787 were 250 CEs before the model was succeeded by the 280 CE.
The W114 coupé’s clean, three-box styling has aged well, avoiding both the excess of contemporary American cars and the plainness of some of its European rivals, while its engineering has earned the range a lasting reputation for durability. As an increasingly appreciated alternative to the pricier W111 coupés, a 250 CE like this one offers an honest, usable way into classic Mercedes coupé ownership.
