The seller offers for sale this 1973 Porsche 914 2.0, powered by a 2.2-litre flat-four engine, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The engine has been rebuilt and bored out from its original 2.0-litre displacement to 2.2 litres. The seller reports that the battery tray shows virtually no rust, a spot that commonly suffers on this model. New tyres have been fitted, and the car is accompanied by a substantial stock of spare parts, including an additional set of windows and a spare targa roof panel.

The 914 was a joint project between Porsche and Volkswagen, conceived to give Porsche an affordable, mid-engine replacement for the ageing 912 while providing Volkswagen with a genuine sports car of its own. Karmann built the rolling chassis, with final assembly carried out at either Volkswagen or Porsche; in Europe the four-cylinder cars were sold through Volkswagen dealers as Volkswagen-Porsches, while in the United States they were marketed simply as Porsches. The six-cylinder 914/6 was dropped in 1972 due to its high cost and slow sales, and for 1973 its place in the range was taken by the 914 2.0, powered by a fuel-injected 2.0-litre version of Volkswagen’s Type 4 engine producing around 100 hp through Bosch D-Jetronic injection. The 2.0 came with an appearance package as standard, including Fuchs alloy wheels, a leather-covered shift knob, a centre storage bin, anti-roll bars and an instrument console with a clock, voltmeter and oil-temperature gauge, and every 914 used a five-speed manual gearbox together with the model’s signature lift-out targa roof panel, which stows in the front luggage compartment. 1973 went on to become the best-selling year for the model.

The mid-engine layout gives the 914 genuinely sports-car-like weight distribution and handling, a rarity for anything carrying a Volkswagen connection at the time, and the 2.0 sits as the sweet spot of the range: meaningfully quicker than the four-cylinder base cars, without the cost and complexity that came with the six-cylinder version. This particular car takes that a step further still, with an engine rebuilt and bored out to 2.2 litres. Combined with reportedly minimal rust and a healthy stock of spare parts, it offers a usable way into one of the most accessible mid-engine Porsches.
