The Austin-Healey 3000 was the product of a partnership between the Austin division of the British Motor Corporation and the Donald Healey Motor Company, with body styling by Jensen Motors and final assembly at MG’s Abingdon plant. Launched in 1959 as the successor to the 100/6, the model was progressively developed through the Mark II of 1961 to this final Mark III BJ8, introduced in 1964 as the most powerful and best-equipped version yet, with 148 to 150 hp from twin SU carburettors, a new centre console, an updated dashboard and power-assisted brakes as standard. In May 1964, the Phase II update brought a revised rear chassis for extra ground clearance, addressing a long-standing criticism of earlier cars. Production of the Mark III, and of the Austin-Healey 3000 line as a whole, ended in December 1967 after a total of 17,712 Mark IIIs had been built, closing out the story of the “Big Healey.”
Muscular looks, strong six-cylinder performance for its era, and a period reputation built on rallying and hill-climb success have made the 3000 an enduring favourite among British sports car collectors, and the Mark III BJ8 is generally regarded as the most refined and best-resolved of the three generations.
