Description

Indian Chief | 2000

Highlights:

– 1,450 cc V-twin S&S engine
– approximately 46,000 km indicated on odometer
– Original Gilroy-era Chief, never restored
– Original paint, saddlebags and exhaust
– Rear brake master cylinder recently rebuilt

The seller offers for sale this 2000 Indian Chief, powered by a 1,450 cc V-twin S&S engine. Finished in a deep maroon and silver two-tone with extensive chrome detailing, this Chief presents as a striking and unmistakably American cruiser, dressed with fringed leather saddlebags, a studded solo seat with passenger pillion, valanced fenders and the signature illuminated Indian head fender light. The odometer indicates approximately 46,000 km. This is an early Gilroy-era machine built around the S&S V-twin and an S&S carburettor, and according to the seller it remains in original condition with no aftermarket parts fitted, retaining its original paint, saddlebags and exhaust. The seller notes the rear brake master cylinder has been rebuilt recently and that the front brake functions properly, while suggesting an inspection for optimum performance. The 60-spoke wheels are described as showing the patina of the years and the headlight housing chrome shows some age, both of which the seller frames as a matter of taste and easily addressed. The seller adds that many of the small components are shared with Harley-Davidson Softail models and are therefore inexpensive and simple to source. Overall the bike is presented in good condition for its age.

The Indian Chief is one of the most evocative names in motorcycling, a model whose flowing skirted fenders and proud profile have made it an enduring icon of the American open road since the pre-war era. When the Indian Motorcycle Company was revived in Gilroy, California, at the turn of the millennium, the new Chief paid homage to that heritage with its deeply valanced fenders, art-deco styling cues and the famous lighted war-bonnet front fender ornament, while drawing on the proven robustness of the S&S V-twin powerplant. S&S engines have long enjoyed a worldwide reputation among enthusiasts for their build quality, reliability and strong output, and their use here gives the Gilroy Chief a character that combines classic looks with dependable, torque-rich performance. As a genuine Indian rather than a re-badged conversion, and as a relatively low-volume product of a short-lived but significant chapter in the marque’s long history, the Gilroy Chief holds a distinct appeal for collectors and riders drawn to big-twin cruisers with authentic American pedigree and unmistakable presence.
