The seller offers for sale this 1991 Honda CRX 1.6 VTi, powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder B16A1 VTEC engine, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. This example is finished in its original colour Celestial Blue and is presented in honest, original condition with unmodified bodywork. The body shows no significant rust, helped by the fact that the car was recently imported from Sweden, where it was driven in an area in which the roads are not salted. It retains its original engine and has been kept to its original factory specification, and according to the seller the maintenance has been kept up to date. The car was used mainly as a second car, which is reflected in its general presentation and its mileage of 118,000 km. A range of original documentation accompanies the car, including the service booklet and the owner’s manual. As it was originally delivered new in Sweden, it carries a number of factory specifications that were not standard on Dutch-delivered models, including cloth upholstery with heated front seats and factory-fitted headlight washers.
The Honda CRX was the sporting two-seat coupé derived from the Civic, and the third-generation model built between 1988 and 1991 is widely regarded today as a modern classic. The 1.6i-VTEC version seen here, known by its EE8 chassis code, was fitted with the B16A1 engine, the first VTEC unit Honda offered in Europe. This naturally aspirated 1.6-litre four-cylinder produces around 150 hp, and with a kerb weight of approximately 990 kg it gives the CRX a light and eager character. VTEC, short for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control, alters the camshaft profile at higher engine speeds, from roughly 5,500 rpm, so that the engine changes character and pulls towards its 8,000 rpm limit with a distinctive sound. It is this analogue, mechanical driving experience, without turbocharging or modern driver aids, that has made the CRX VTEC so well regarded among enthusiasts of Japanese sports cars from this era.
