The seller offers for sale a 1978 Volvo 262C Bertone, a distinctive coupe built as a collaboration between Volvo and the renowned Italian design house Bertone. This particular example is powered by a 2.7-litre (2664cc) V6 engine and mated to a manual 4-speed gearbox with overdrive. Originally assembled in Italy after shipment from Sweden, it was delivered new to the United States, where it was owned by an attorney until imported to the Netherlands by the current seller. Since arriving in the Netherlands, the car has covered approximately 1,000 miles and has been maintained with biennial inspections (APK).
This Volvo is equipped with a broad range of factory options, including power steering, cruise control, power-operated mirrors, windows, and antenna, as well as an inflatable spare wheel with electric pump. These features contribute to a driving experience that was well ahead of its time in terms of comfort and convenience.
The car’s exterior presents well. Most of the bodywork still wears its original paint, though two sections have been resprayed. Some panels show light fading and minor use-related marks.
The interior is a standout feature: black leather seats with unique woven inserts are said to be in beautiful shape, with all instruments and electronics functioning properly.
The Volvo 262C was first introduced in 1977 and represented a major stylistic departure for Volvo, a brand traditionally known for its practical and boxy sedans. Tasked with designing a more luxurious and exclusive model, Volvo partnered with Carrozzeria Bertone of Turin, who gave the 262C its characteristic lower roofline, wide C-pillars, and premium trim. Unlike most of the Volvo lineup at the time, this model was assembled in Italy, where craftsmanship and styling took precedence over volume production.
The 262C was based on the 260 series, using the same drivetrain and mechanicals as the 264, but featured a dramatically altered profile and a far more upscale interior. The car was aimed at buyers interested in a European grand tourer rather than a utilitarian family car. Only around 6,600 examples were produced during its entire run from 1977 to 1981, making it one of the rarest Volvos of the period. The car was powered by a PRV V6 engine, developed jointly by Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo, which became known for its smooth delivery and reliable performance when properly maintained.
While the styling was polarising at the time, the 262C has gained recognition over the years for its uniqueness and its role in expanding Volvo’s image beyond utility and safety. The car’s exclusivity and luxury orientation made it a flagship model in the late 1970s, competing with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz SLC and Cadillac Seville.
Today, the 262C appeals to collectors of unusual European coupes and Volvo enthusiasts alike, particularly well-preserved examples with documented mileage and originality.
