The seller offers for sale this 1944 Volkswagen Kübelwagen Typ 82, a military-designed light utility vehicle developed by Ferdinand Porsche for the German armed forces during World War II. This specific example, now restored, is powered by a 1,185 cc four-cylinder petrol engine with a manual transmission.
Imported from Austria, the car is accompanied by its original Austrian civilian paperwork, reinforcing its documented provenance. The restoration was carried out in 2024, during which the car was returned to original specification. The seats and canvas top were reupholstered using fabric and materials identical to those used in 1944, including the correct color codes (RAL). Technical components have been reviewed, and the vehicle is in good mechanical and cosmetic condition.
The Volkswagen Kübelwagen Typ 82 was developed in the late 1930s as a lightweight, air-cooled, rear-wheel-drive utility vehicle for military applications. Based on the mechanical platform of the VW Beetle, the Kübelwagen was engineered with simplicity, reliability, and off-road capability in mind. Weighing just over 700 kg, it featured portal axles for improved ground clearance and a flat underbody to aid in obstacle negotiation.
Unlike the Allied Jeep, the Kübelwagen used rear-wheel drive and relied on its light weight, self-locking differential, and independent suspension to tackle rough terrain. It was deployed in all major European and North African theatres and became a symbol of German wartime mobility. Over 50,000 units were produced between 1940 and 1945.
In the post-war era, surviving Kübelwagens were often lost, scrapped, or repurposed for civilian use. Very few have survived with correct documentation and originality, and even fewer have received period-correct restorations using historically accurate parts and materials. The value of these vehicles lies not only in their military history but also in their link to early Volkswagen engineering and design.
Today, the Typ 82 is sought after by collectors, military vehicle historians, and enthusiasts of early Porsche and Volkswagen design. This particular example, with its 2024 restoration, limited post-rebuild mileage, and complete provenance, presents a rare opportunity to acquire a historically significant vehicle that is ready for both preservation and display.
