The seller offers for sale this 1983 Volkswagen Iltis Bombardier, powered by a 1.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
This example is a Bombardier-built Iltis, produced in Valcourt, Quebec, under licence from Volkswagen for supply to the Belgian Army. The vehicle presents in its original military olive green finish with a matching soft top, and the bodywork shows no significant signs of damage. The interior retains its military-specification seats and fittings in good condition, and the vehicle is equipped with a rear-mounted spare wheel on a military carrier, a jerry can, and additional field accessories.
The Volkswagen Iltis, officially designated the Type 183, was developed in the early 1970s by Audi engineers on behalf of Volkswagen to replace the DKW Munga in service with the West German Bundeswehr. Featuring body-on-frame construction, selectable four-wheel drive, a 77% climbing gradient and a wading depth of 60 cm, the Iltis was designed for demanding tactical roles including liaison, reconnaissance and troop transport. In 1983, the Canadian Bombardier Group acquired the manufacturing licence and subsequently produced a modified version, known internally as the Polecat, delivering approximately 2,500 units to the Canadian and Belgian armed forces between 1984 and 1986. Total production across both manufacturers reached approximately 9,500 military units.
The five-speed gearbox, shared with the Audi 100, features an unsynchronised low ratio first gear optimised for off-road use. The front and rear axles are identical in design and fitted with optional lockable differentials, a configuration that directly influenced the development of the Audi quattro all-wheel drive system. Volkswagen guaranteed full functionality between minus 30 and plus 44 degrees Celsius, underlining the vehicle’s suitability for a wide range of operational environments.
