The seller offers for sale this 1991 Volkswagen Golf Country, a factory-modified all-wheel-drive version of the Golf Mk2 designed for light off-road use. Powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a manual transmission, this model was developed in partnership with Steyr-Daimler-Puch and originally marketed as a rugged crossover alternative well ahead of its time.

This particular Golf Country was imported from Germany to Estonia in 2010. It had a valid TÜV inspection and a green environmental sticker (Umweltplakette) at the time. The seller retained documentation from the import. The car was used regularly until 2016, then placed in storage until 2024, when it was reconditioned by a specialist classic car workshop in Tallinn. Work included a new timing belt, radiator, ventilator, brake pads, and oil service. The car now holds a valid Estonian technical inspection until October 2025 and is registered and insured for road use.

The car is finished in its original paint. However, there is surface rust on the bullbar and the tubular subframe supporting the chassis. The small trim piece beneath the front grille shows signs of weathering. Aside from these elements, the exterior panels are reported to be in good structural condition.

Inside, the car retains its original Golf Country-specific interior, though the driver’s seat had already been replaced when the current owner acquired it. The side bolster on the driver’s seat is worn, a common issue for Mk2 Golfs of this era. The handbrake and gearshift leather covers are worn and would benefit from replacement. Gauges and controls are functional, except the passenger-side electric window motor, which works intermittently.

Mechanically, the car is described as sound. The gearbox shifts smoothly, and no noises are reported from the drivetrain. The lights, indicators, and braking system operate correctly, and the vehicle passed its state inspection without issue.

The Volkswagen Golf Country was a bold attempt by Volkswagen to merge the practicality of the Golf Mk2 with off-road versatility. Produced from 1990 to 1991 in limited numbers—around 7,735 units in total—this model featured a reinforced body, lifted suspension, Syncro four-wheel drive system, skid plates, and external elements like bullbars and rear-mounted spare wheels. It was aimed at rural drivers and outdoors enthusiasts needing compact size with off-road capability.

Unlike standard Golfs, the Country variant was not assembled entirely by Volkswagen. Base Golfs were shipped to Austria where Steyr-Daimler-Puch added the off-road modifications. The result was a Golf with nearly 18 cm of ground clearance and a quirky, utility-focused appearance. These models were only available in select markets and never sold in high volumes, making them increasingly collectible today.

Despite its rugged construction, the Golf Country offered familiar Golf handling and comfort, with modest off-road capability thanks to its Syncro AWD system and upgraded chassis. As one of the earliest examples of a factory-built crossover, the Golf Country holds a unique place in automotive history. Surviving examples in original, running condition are increasingly rare, especially those that have not been extensively modified.

With its original parts intact, recent recommissioning, and registration, this example presents an opportunity for enthusiasts of early crossovers, off-roaders, or rare Volkswagen variants. While it shows cosmetic wear, it remains a well-preserved example of one of VW’s more eccentric creations.
