The Golf Country traces its roots to a show car rather than a production plan. Volkswagen displayed the Montana concept at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show, a raised, all-wheel-drive Golf Mk2 built purely to gauge reaction. The response from dealers was strong enough that Volkswagen decided to put a version of the concept into limited series production. Complete Golf CL Syncro cars were shipped from Wolfsburg to Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria, the specialist that had also built the original Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, where each car received an intermediate tubular frame, guard rails, a rear-mounted spare wheel carrier, skid plates and a raised suspension. Production ran from 1990 to the end of 1991, and only around 7,735 examples were completed, making the Golf Country one of the rarest members of the Mk2 Golf family.
In effect, the Golf Country was a crossover SUV years before the term existed, predating the Toyota RAV4 by roughly four years while still driving and being maintained like an everyday Golf. Under normal conditions power goes to the front wheels, with the Syncro viscous coupling sending drive to the rear axle when it detects wheel slip, giving the car genuine capability away from tarmac without turning it into a dedicated off-roader.
