The seller offers for sale this 1995 Volkswagen Beetle 1.6i Open Air Edition, powered by a 1.6-litre fuel-injected engine, paired with a manual transmission. The car is one of around 1,000 Open Air examples built at Volkswagen’s Puebla plant in Mexico, a limited run fitted with a large electric sliding steel sunroof, of which fewer than 30 are believed to have been sold new through Spanish Volkswagen dealers. This example was restored to original specification around six years ago and has covered only 9,000 km since, with the sunroof mechanism and all original features described as fully functional.

The oil, gearbox oil, filters and brakes have all been renewed shortly before sale, and the car holds historic-vehicle documentation following an inspection completed earlier this year. Presented in fully original specification throughout, the car offers a rare and well-documented take on one of the world’s most recognisable classics.

Production of the classic air-cooled Beetle continued in Mexico long after it ended elsewhere, with the Puebla factory building the model for the domestic and export markets into the late 1990s and beyond. The Open Air conversion, fitted before these late-series cars were sold new, gave buyers the option of a full-length electric steel sunroof, a rare and now highly sought-after feature among Beetle enthusiasts, particularly on later, fuel-injected examples such as this one.

Combining the timeless, rounded lines of the original Beetle with the added airiness of its electric sliding roof, this Open Air example offers something genuinely different within the model’s huge production run. Its late-production fuel-injected engine, low recorded mileage since restoration and well-documented history make it a particularly appealing example for collectors seeking a rare and usable classic Beetle.
