The private seller offers for sale this 1954 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith LWB, powered by a 4.6-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. This stately long-wheelbase limousine, chassis number CLW23, wears an elegant aluminium body by the renowned coachbuilder H.J. Mulliner, finished in a classic two-tone scheme of black over ivory. It is a right-hand drive car and is equipped with a sliding sunroof. Inside, cream leather upholstery is complemented by richly figured burr walnut woodwork, and the rear compartment features a cabinet with inlaid marquetry, a clock and a fitted drinks cabinet with crystal decanters and glasses.
The car shows its age and use honestly. The paint finish is worn in some places and the leather upholstery displays a well-used patina. The original division between the passenger compartment and the driver’s compartment has been partially removed to create more legroom behind the steering wheel; according to the seller, this is relatively easy to reinstate. A modern radio has been fitted alongside the original set. The original tools are present in their designated compartment, together with the Service Manual and the Handbook.
Introduced in 1946, the Silver Wraith was the first Rolls-Royce of the post-war era and was supplied as a rolling chassis to Britain’s finest coachbuilders, who clothed it in bespoke bodies for royalty, heads of state and discerning private owners. In 1951 a long-wheelbase version was added, designed specifically for formal limousine coachwork, and only 639 examples were built before production ended in 1959. H.J. Mulliner, one of the most respected names in British coachbuilding, was responsible for some of the most graceful designs on this chassis.
Power comes from the 4.6-litre six-cylinder engine with its overhead inlet and side exhaust valve layout, a design famous for its silky smoothness, near-silent running and effortless torque. It is paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox, synchronised on all but first gear, and operated by the traditional right-hand change. With its towering radiator grille, flowing wings and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, the Silver Wraith LWB embodies the grandeur of the post-war coachbuilt era, and it offers a rare opportunity to own a genuine piece of motoring aristocracy that remains a pleasure to use.
