  • Collector-grade example with restoration potential

The seller offers for sale this 1977 Porsche 928, a significant piece of Porsche history as one of the very first examples of the model that marked a bold new direction for the marque. With chassis number 584, it belongs to the earliest production batch of only 1,200 cars built in the debut year. It is finished in Silver Grey Metallic and features the highly sought-after Pascha fabric interior, both iconic choices that embody the pure vision of designer Tony Lapine’s original concept for the 928.

Equipped with a 4.5-litre V8 engine coupled to a rare dogleg manual gearbox, this Porsche offers a more engaging and dynamic driving experience than many later automatic versions. Early manual 928s like this are known for their lighter weight, purer styling, and more responsive character, making them particularly appealing to enthusiasts and collectors seeking the essence of the 928’s sporting ambitions.

The history of this car is partly unknown due to a long period in storage. It is believed to have originally been delivered in Germany, then imported to Sweden before being returned to Germany in 1998. In 2015, it was discovered in Hamburg and subsequently brought back to life mechanically, with numerous works carried out to restore its running condition. Documentation includes copies of previous German registration papers, adding some useful traceability.

Cosmetically, the car largely retains its original paint, which is a positive feature for collectors. There is no visible rust, but the paint has peeled on the front bumper, and there is paint reaction visible on the lower edges of the aluminium doors. Additionally, some of the rubber seals are showing age-related cracking. The body panels remain accident-free and in fundamentally sound condition, offering a solid base for either preservation or restoration.

Inside, the car retains its original interior, displaying visible patina consistent with age and use. The fabric on one of the rear seats is damaged, and the passenger seat has a tear. However, the sale includes a roll of new Pascha fabric in the correct original pattern, sufficient to reupholster the entire interior, presenting a rare opportunity for restoration while maintaining authenticity.

Mechanically, this Porsche has been substantially recommissioned since its rediscovery in 2015. Work performed includes replacement of all fluids, a new timing belt and other belts, a new water pump, new brake hoses, a new fuel pump and filter, alternator overhaul, injection system servicing, replacement of the heater thermostat, and a new clutch from Sachs. These measures mean the car currently drives and brakes well, and it is described as reliable.

However, some functional issues remain to be addressed. The speedometer has stopped working recently (though it functioned until about 500-1,000 km ago), the horn and rear wiper are inoperative, the fuel warning light stays illuminated despite the gauge functioning, and the brake warning light occasionally comes on due to a worn pad contact, though it can be switched off via the central indicator button. Additionally, the air conditioning is non-functional.

This 928 is sold with several desirable period extras, including a partial toolkit, a period Blaupunkt Nürnberg radio, a working rear electric antenna, a 928 sales brochure from 1978, and an original Porsche colour chart.

The Porsche 928 was launched at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show as a groundbreaking departure from Porsche’s traditional rear-engined sports car formula. Conceived as a possible successor to the 911, it combined a front-mounted V8 engine with a transaxle layout for ideal weight distribution. Its styling was futuristic and clean, with a low-slung profile and innovative pop-up headlights. The 928 quickly earned acclaim for its balance of performance and comfort, winning the European Car of the Year award in 1978 — the only sports car ever to do so.

Early 928s, such as this 1977 model, are particularly prized for their purer styling, mechanical simplicity, and lighter curb weight compared to later versions. Collectors value these first-year cars for their historical significance, rarity, and the unique driving feel of the early models. The dogleg manual gearbox adds further appeal, offering a connection to Porsche’s motorsport heritage and providing a more engaging experience than the widely fitted automatic transmissions in later years.

Over time, the 928 has transitioned from an underappreciated curiosity to a respected classic, with values steadily rising as enthusiasts recognise its engineering significance and driving pleasure. Early examples in original colours and configurations, especially those retaining rare details like the Pascha interior, have become increasingly sought-after. Whether preserved as a patinated survivor or taken to the next level with a sympathetic restoration, this Porsche 928 offers the chance to own a fascinating piece of the brand’s history and an under-the-radar classic that continues to grow in appreciation.
