The seller offers for sale this 1968 Porsche 912 EV Conversion, powered by an electric motor producing 170–200bhp, paired with a single-speed transmission. Finished in Ruby Red Metallic over a black-and-houndstooth leather interior, this example presents with chrome bumpers, period-style Fuchs-pattern alloy wheels, and clean, straight bodywork. The cabin retains a classic 912 dashboard with VDO gauges, including the original speedometer, and a 912-badged centre console, updated with a MOMO steering wheel. The front and rear seats are trimmed in black leather with houndstooth inserts, and the front luggage compartment retains its correct fittings, including a space-saver spare. The car began life in California, last registered to a private owner in San Francisco before being sold via a Monterey, CA dealer in July 2009 to a UK-based buyer, who then imported the car to England and first registered it in the UK in April 2012. The history file includes the original California Certificate of Title and the DMV Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment form documenting this sale, along with body-type and VIN records confirming the car as a genuine 912. The current UK V5C confirms three former keepers and notes the car was registered and used overseas before being rebuilt in the UK ahead of its current specification. The VIN is confirmed directly on the car via the original Karmann coachbuilder plate and the Porsche K.G. Federal Motor Vehicle Standards compliance plate, both matching the paperwork.

Between January and December 2024, the car underwent a ground-up EV conversion carried out by RetroElectric Limited, a Hampshire-based specialist in classic vehicle electrification, in collaboration with PIE Performance on the suspension and underpinnings. The build is documented across six itemised VAT invoices, covering the bespoke engineering of the motor cradle and battery enclosures, fabrication of the front and rear battery boxes, a complete high- and low-voltage wiring harness build-up, installation of the batteries, DC/DC converter, battery management system and onboard charger, a custom gear selector module and pedal spacing adjustment, commissioning of all EV systems followed by dedicated road testing, four-wheel alignment, full interior trim completion, and a rear camera and stereo installation. The car’s original matching-numbers engine and transmission have been retained and are included with the sale, offering a future owner the option to return the car to its original specification. The car has also been active on the UK classic scene, taking part in the Shere Hill Climb in September 2025, where it also held a sponsor credential. The current MOT was passed on 18 February 2026 and is valid to 17 February 2027.

The Porsche 912 was introduced in 1965 as a more accessible, four-cylinder companion to the newly launched 911, sharing the same body and much of the chassis while offering a lighter, simpler alternative for buyers seeking the styling and handling of the 911 at a lower price point. It remains one of Porsche’s most usable and characterful early classics, prized today as an approachable entry point into air-cooled ownership. This example represents a rare, forward-looking take on the model: a bespoke electric drivetrain in place of the original air-cooled flat-four, aimed at buyers drawn to the 912’s design and driving position but looking for a modern, fast-charging usability.

Under the skin, the rear compartment now houses the RetroElectric motor and battery management unit, with visible high-voltage orange cabling and connectors, while a finned underbody battery enclosure runs beneath the cabin between the front and rear axles. The pack totals approximately 43kWh across 16 modules in a 60/40 front-to-rear split, supporting CCS fast charging via a filler-flap-mounted charge port and giving a real-world range of approximately 160 miles. The car is fitted with the TracTive R/T full coilover suspension package, using electronically controlled, semi-active dampers adjustable for compression and rebound in real time, and rides on 15-inch Fuchs alloy wheels with 185/65 Pirelli Cinturato tyres. Interior seating comprises Recaro Expert Pro seats trimmed in leather and houndstooth fabric. Per the Classic Porsche magazine feature, the complete conversion, covering engineering, batteries, motor, suspension and trim, represented an investment of approximately £70,000.

The car has attracted media attention since completion of the conversion. It featured in Classic Porsche magazine’s March 2025 issue (No. 113, “60 Years of 912”), in a multi-page article titled “Shock Treatment” by Steve Bennett, with photography of the car on the road and technical coverage of the conversion, and confirms the build was engineered by Tim Hustwayte at RetroElectric in collaboration with PIE Performance. The car also appeared as the presenters’ drive car in the opening episode of BBC One’s Antiques Road Trip, Series 32 (“A Cool Car and Capers in Cornwall”), and was the subject of a dedicated feature in the Daily Express (“Porsche’s Electric” by Dominic Bliss), which included commentary from Tim Hustwayte of RetroElectric on classic-to-EV conversion.
