The seller offers for sale this 1966 Porsche 912, a Belgian-market example originally delivered by importer D’Ieteren. This 912 has been in private ownership since 2006 and is presented with matching numbers and a confirmed mileage of 89,200 km. It is powered by a 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder air-cooled engine paired with a manual transmission.
According to the seller, the car underwent a restoration, including disassembly and a return to bare metal before being repainted in its original colour. A photo report of the restoration is available.
It retains its original interior in black imitation leather with only light wear consistent with age. All mechanical instruments are reported to function correctly. A small tear is present in the headliner between the sun visors. The vehicle also benefits from the addition of electronic ignition.
The paintwork is reported to be in clean visual condition, with even finish and no visible issues that would require immediate attention. The body lines are consistent, with all exterior trim appearing present and well-fitted. Lighting and indicators work as they should. The car drives, brakes, and shifts properly, and has a current inspection certificate.
The overall technical condition of this Porsche is described as ready to drive with no immediate maintenance required. It was driven regularly within the collection and maintained in roadworthy condition.
The Porsche 912 was introduced in 1965 as a more affordable companion to the newly launched 911. With rising production costs for the 911, Porsche sought to offer a four-cylinder model using the proven engine from the outgoing 356. The result was the 912—a car that retained the design of the 911, including the new monocoque chassis, but with simplified mechanicals.
Fitted with a 1.6-litre flat-four engine producing around 90 horsepower, the 912 delivered nimble handling and impressive fuel efficiency. The car was lighter than its six-cylinder sibling, making it responsive and more balanced for everyday driving. It was an immediate commercial success, outselling the 911 during its early years of production.
The 912 was offered in both coupé and Targa variants, with the Targa making its debut in 1967. Though positioned as a lower-cost alternative, the 912 shared much of its interior and build quality with the 911, giving buyers access to Porsche’s design and engineering without the high price tag.
By 1969, the 912 was phased out to make way for the 914, although a short-lived 912E reappeared for the US market in 1976. Today, the 912 has gained recognition as a classic in its own right. It offers vintage Porsche charm with a driving experience that is approachable, particularly for those who appreciate mechanical simplicity and balance.
This 1966 example, with its Belgian provenance and careful long-term ownership, stands as a well-kept version of an early 912. Its restoration and mechanical updates, such as the electronic ignition, add usability without compromising originality.
