Description

Packard One-Twenty | 1936

Highlights:

  • Award-winning older restoration with documented provenance
  • Overhauled in 2024 by a renowned German specialist
  • Original US-delivered example with H-registration and German title
  • Matching rumble seat, artillery wheels, dual spares and working radio
  • 4.6L straight-eight engine with 3-speed manual gearbox

The seller offers for sale this 1936 Packard One-Twenty Cabriolet, a classic American convertible powered by a 4621 cc straight-eight engine paired with a three-speed manual transmission. The car has covered only 30,776 miles from new, and the mileage is verified with historical documentation. In 2024, the car underwent a  technical overhaul at the reputable  restoration workshop in Germany.

This Packard is presented in its striking original configuration with a yellow-cream exterior finish, red detailing, and a beige leather interior. The body features dual sidemounted spare wheels, artillery wheels, chrome bumpers, cormorant radiator mascot, and a rumble seat (also trimmed in matching beige leather). The tan fabric convertible top is in good condition and comes with a correct tonneau cover. There are minor paint chips on the bonnet, but no rust or structural damage. The overall exterior condition is good.

Inside, the condition is beautiful. Original gauges, switches, and features, including a period-correct heater and radio, are functioning properly. The upholstery and door panels show no visible wear, and the rear rumble seat appears barely used.

Mechanically, the car is roadworthy. The engine has been rebuilt with new pistons, the carburetor cleaned, and the radiator replaced. The brakes, suspension, and electrical system have been inspected and partially renewed where needed. The gearbox shifts smoothly without noise, and the engine starts reliably and runs without smoke or irregularities. The car features the early hydraulic braking system that became standard in this series. It holds a valid technical inspection certificate.

The Packard One-Twenty was introduced as a more affordable luxury model to help the company survive the Great Depression. Despite its position in the lineup, the One-Twenty maintained the Packard reputation for quality and craftsmanship. It marked the first time the company introduced hydraulic brakes, a major innovation at the time. The styling of the 1936 model was refined and elegant, featuring a low-slung design, sweeping fenders, and Packard’s distinctive vertical grille. The convertible coupe version with rumble seat, as offered here, is particularly desirable among collectors.

Unlike many pre-war vehicles, the One-Twenty combines classic looks with relatively modern driving characteristics. Its eight-cylinder engine and balanced chassis offer a level of drivability that makes it suitable for touring, shows, or high-end events. With its documented US history, extensive restoration, recent technical overhaul, and registration in Germany with H-Zulassung (historic vehicle status), this example stands out as a rare and investment-worthy opportunity.
