The seller offers for sale a 1974 Opel Rekord Sedan, originally delivered in the Netherlands and later restored to a good mechanical and cosmetic standard. The car is equipped with a 1.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and manual transmission.
In the past year, the car received extensive mechanical work including the replacement of brake cylinders, hoses, springs, and shock absorbers. The fuel and coolant hoses were also replaced, and the starter motor was renewed. A service, including valve adjustments, was carried out. The car is mechanically described as good. Lighting and indicators are in working order and it holds a valid Dutch inspection.
The bodywork is in overall good condition with a few spots requiring minor attention. The remainder of the exterior presents well for its age. The paint is in serviceable shape, though it may benefit from partial refinishing if desired. Inside, the interior is mostly original and in decent shape, though the instrument cluster was repainted at some point in a manner that lacks factory quality. Despite this, the seats, trim, and general appearance are rated as good.
The Rekord is fitted with a stainless steel exhaust and a MotaLita steering wheel with a custom hub. Recently, suspension points, springs and shock absorbers have been renewed. The original steering wheel is included and can be refitted if preferred. These subtle modifications add a personalized touch while maintaining the car’s classic character.
The Opel Rekord was one of the most popular family cars in Europe during the 1960s and 70s, appreciated for its solid engineering and no-nonsense design. The 1700 variant offered a good balance between performance and efficiency, well-suited to long-distance driving or urban use. In 1974, the Rekord was near the end of its D-series generation, which was known for its larger, more angular design and a focus on ride comfort.
Opel positioned the Rekord as a middle-class alternative to more premium German brands. It was respected for its dependability and relatively affordable upkeep. Restored examples like this one are increasingly appreciated by classic car enthusiasts who value originality combined with modern mechanical reliability. While not yet as widely collected as some of its contemporaries, the Rekord offers an accessible entry into vintage car ownership with manageable running costs and solid parts availability.
