Launched in 1996, the R170-generation SLK introduced Mercedes-Benz’s Vario-Roof, a fully retractable steel hardtop that folds into the boot at the touch of a button, transforming the car from a closed coupe into an open roadster in around 25 seconds. This example is a post-facelift car, built after the February 2000 update that brought revised bumpers, body-coloured side skirts, new mirrors with integrated indicators and, on manual cars, a new six-speed gearbox in place of the earlier five-speed unit. The SLK 200 Kompressor was introduced with the same facelift as a new entry point into the range, using a supercharged version of Mercedes-Benz’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine to give the compact roadster brisk, usable performance without the running costs of the six-cylinder SLK 320.
Built on a shortened version of the contemporary C-Class platform, the SLK combines double-wishbone front suspension with a multi-link rear axle, tuned for a blend of sporty handling and everyday comfort, while the steel Vario-Roof brings a level of refinement, security and weather protection that fabric-roofed rivals of the era couldn’t match.
