Born in the early 1970s as the R107 generation, the SL was designed to combine open-air touring with the comfort and safety standards of a Mercedes-Benz saloon, and it went on to become one of the longest-running and most recognisable sports cabriolets ever built.
The 450 SL was the first of the V8-powered R107 models and was introduced with a 4.5-litre engine, which gave the car smooth, effortless performance and, together with the three-speed automatic gearbox, made it an ideal grand tourer.
