The seller offers for sale this 1964 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagoda, a classic German roadster from the W113 series known for its elegant design and refined driving characteristics. This example is powered by a 2.3-liter six-cylinder petrol engine paired with a manual transmission. The car was previously owned by a custodian in Illinois, United States, who kept the vehicle registered there for nearly twenty years from 1999. The vehicle originally left Germany before being exported to the United States and returned to Germany in 2018. The car underwent restoration in 1983, presumably in Germany, before it was shipped to the United States. Between 2021 and 2023 the vehicle underwent partial restoration including replacement of rust-affected floor and sill sections, overhaul of the hydraulic steering system and fuel pump, replacement of rear wheel brake cylinders, installation of a new clutch and a new exhaust system, and partial repainting following the work. The car is equipped with an original Mercedes-Benz exchange engine carrying the correct stamped engine number as well as an original Mercedes-Benz exchange four-speed gearbox. The interior features MB-Tex upholstery and functioning instruments.
The current, but undocumented mileage is 68.000 km and it holds a valid technical inspection.
The car is equipped with a soft top that is described as being in good condition with only light signs of use while remaining waterproof. The soft top mechanism operates smoothly and quietly according to the seller. In addition, the vehicle is supplied with a removable hardtop that is also described as being in good condition with only minor surface marks.
The Mercedes-Benz 230 SL, part of the W113 generation, was introduced in the early 1960s as a successor to the 190 SL and 300 SL Roadster. The model quickly became known for its distinctive “Pagoda” hardtop design, which features a slightly concave roof shape that inspired the model’s nickname. Combining sporting performance with comfort and reliability, the W113 series became popular among enthusiasts seeking a refined open-top touring car. The model was engineered with a focus on safety and drivability, offering independent suspension and advanced engineering for its time. Today the Pagoda series is widely appreciated among collectors for its timeless design, build quality and comfortable driving experience.
