The seller offers for sale this 1983 Mercedes-Benz W460 230G, powered by a 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox. Finished in Colorado Beige over a black interior, this left-hand-drive example is a Steyr-Puch built G-Wagen that was originally supplied as a police vehicle and is registered with nine seats, including two rear trunk benches that each seat two. It retains its original 24V electrical system along with the heavy-duty specification typical of utilitarian-spec examples, and the car has been comprehensively restored, with extensive work carried out throughout.
During the restoration the car was fully disassembled and painted inside and out in Colorado Beige using genuine Glasurit paint and clear coat. A number of components, including the front bumper, front grille, engine shield, rear bumper sections, mud flap supports, side mirror arms, spare wheel carrier, rear brake drums and headlight protection grills, were sand blasted and powder coated in satin black for durability, while the air filter box, bonnet reinforcement rails and battery hold-down brackets were finished in satin black paint. A layer of STP Gold soundproofing was added to all five doors, the floor, the inside C-pillars and the inner trunk to rear fenders, and all four side door windows received new gaskets, trims and vapour barriers. The genuine steel wheels were sand blasted and powder coated in Mercedes satin silver, fitted with new Yokohama Geolandar A/T tyres and new Puch wheel caps.
The car retains its original 24V external power and jump-start connection together with the dedicated factory cables and socket, as well as the complete original under-seat utility kit, including the factory-mounted axe and shovel. The heating system was disassembled, cleaned and refitted, and an upgraded audio system has been added using a Continental DAB Bluetooth head unit paired with two sets of Hertz speakers, a separate antenna and a microphone. Numerous new and NOS parts were fitted during the work, among them a new front windshield, NOS 230G side mirror logos, the Steyr Daimler Puch trunk door logo, NOS genuine Mercedes W460 headlights, genuine Puch interior buttons, bonnet stoppers, genuine mud flaps, a Varta Silver battery and zinc-plated hinges, latches and metal fittings. Mechanically, the car received new front and rear dampers, a handbrake shoe set, fresh engine oil and filters, serviced front and rear differentials with new oil and gaskets, new gearbox oil, brake fluid and coolant. The original black interior is in good condition.
The W460 series marked the launch of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in 1979, a model developed as a rugged off-road vehicle and built in Graz, Austria, in cooperation with Steyr-Daimler-Puch. The 230G was the petrol-powered entry in the early range, combining a robust ladder-frame chassis, solid axles and selectable differential locks with the simple, boxy styling that has since become iconic. Early W460 examples in long-wheelbase station wagon form, particularly former service and police vehicles in well-kept and restored condition, are increasingly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts who value the model’s authenticity and genuine off-road capability.
With its torquey four-cylinder engine, low-range transfer case and three differential locks, the 230G offers the unhurried, capable character that defines the original G-Wagen, while the long-wheelbase body provides generous space for passengers and equipment. The combination of the factory metal sunroof, nine-seat layout, period-correct restoration and retained military and utility features makes this a distinctive and usable example of an early G-Class.
