Description

Mercedes-Benz 220A Cabriolet | 1952

Highlights:

    • Recently repainted in period-correct color
    • Burgundy leather interior
    • Imported from the USA with EU taxes paid
    • 2.2 Liter 6-cylinder engine with manual gearbox
    • Equipped with period features like Telefunken radio and wheel trims

The seller offers for sale a 1952 Mercedes-Benz 220A Cabriolet, a refined post-war touring car powered by a 2195 cc inline-six petrol engine paired with a manual transmission. This example retains much of its original character and has undergone recent cosmetic care, including a new repaint that enhances its classic presentation. Originally sold in the United States, the car was later imported to Spain, where all relevant taxes have been paid, though it has not yet been registered. It is therefore ready for registration anywhere in Europe.

The exterior condition is described as very good. The body has been freshly painted and presents well. The car still features its original wheel trims and a large Telefunken radio, period accessories that enhance its authenticity. The burgundy convertible top complements the interior color scheme, contributing to the vehicle’s vintage elegance.

Inside, the original burgundy leather interior has been preserved in very good condition. All key interior components are intact and require no immediate attention. The dashboard, seats, and trim show signs of age but remain functional and well-kept, with a level of patina that reflects respectful aging rather than neglect. The vehicle has been out of regular use for two years, but has been started and moved periodically to preserve mechanical health.

Mechanically, the engine is reported to run smoothly and without noise, and the manual gearbox engages without issues. While the car does not currently have a valid technical inspection, this is not mandatory for a car of its age under Spanish law. The vehicle is not equipped with modern upgrades such as power steering or disc brakes, remaining largely faithful to its factory setup. The exhaust system and tires appear to be in serviceable condition. The seller notes that while it drives and operates as expected, a basic tune-up may be advisable before undertaking longer trips.

The Mercedes-Benz 220A (W187) debuted in 1951 as the German automaker’s flagship luxury model during the early post-war recovery period. It marked a return to form for Mercedes, offering understated elegance, robust engineering, and a touch of pre-war grandeur. The 220A Cabriolet was one of the most exclusive variants, built in small numbers and primarily targeted at an upper-class clientele.

The W187 was powered by a newly developed 2.2L six-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft, offering smooth and reliable performance suitable for both city and long-distance touring. The bodywork was hand-finished and constructed with attention to detail, with extensive use of chrome, leather, and wood veneer throughout. The Cabriolet models—both the 2-door and more rare 4-door versions—were among the most expensive German cars of the early 1950s.

Only a few thousand 220A Cabriolets were produced between 1951 and 1955, making them increasingly rare today. Surviving examples often end up in collections or concours events. Their historical significance lies not only in their luxury and style, but also in what they represented for Mercedes-Benz: a rebirth of prestige and craftsmanship in a post-war world.

This example, with its recent repaint, preserved interior, and documentation of taxes paid, offers a chance to own one of the foundational icons of the Mercedes-Benz brand. While some recommissioning may be advisable due to its period of inactivity, the vehicle appears complete and fundamentally sound—a desirable foundation for enjoyment or future restoration.
