The professional seller offers for sale this 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, powered by a 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Finished in red with a cream interior and a cream fabric soft top, this 190 SL presents the classic colour combination that suits the elegant lines of the model so well. Whitewall tyres with body-coloured wheels and chrome hubcaps, the large three-pointed star in the grille and the chrome bumpers with overriders complete its period appearance.
Inside, cream seats and door panels are combined with a dashboard painted in body colour and the slender ivory steering wheel that is so characteristic of Mercedes-Benz cars of this era. The car is offered as a genuine 1960 example and gives a new owner a solid basis to enjoy as it is or to develop further to their own taste. The photos include the engine bay, the luggage compartment and detail shots of the body, so prospective bidders can form a clear impression of the car.
The 190 SL was presented at the International Motor Sports Show in New York in 1954, alongside the legendary 300 SL Gullwing, at the initiative of the American importer Max Hoffman, who saw a strong market for an elegant, more accessible open sports car. Production started in 1955 and continued until 1963, during which time almost 26,000 cars were built. With its styling clearly derived from the 300 SL, including the characteristic eyebrows above the wheel arches and the wide grille with the large central star, the 190 SL brought the glamour of the SL name to a wider audience and became a favourite among the international jet set of its time.
Technically, the 190 SL is based on a shortened floorpan from the Mercedes-Benz Ponton saloon, with independent suspension all round. Its 1897 cc overhead-camshaft four-cylinder engine, fed by twin Solex carburettors, produces around 105 hp and gives the car lively and refined performance for a touring sports car of the period. Today the 190 SL is highly regarded by collectors as one of the most elegant Mercedes-Benz models of the 1950s and early 1960s, combining timeless design, quality engineering and a pleasant, relaxed driving experience.
