The seller offers for sale this 1964 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL, a desirable early “Pagoda” model that has benefited from extensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration. In 2018, the original engine and fuel injection pump were overhauled and upgraded with an electronic injection system to improve reliability and drivability. At the same time, the fuel tank, fuel pump, and lines were all replaced, and the gearbox received new rubber bushings. A stainless steel exhaust system was also fitted.
Technically, the car is described as being in good condition. Braking performance has been enhanced with the addition of rear disc brakes—originally only front discs were standard. The car was also delivered new with power steering, which remains functional. The electrical system, lighting, and indicators operate properly. It has a valid technical inspection.
The bodywork is good, with the paint in beautiful condition. The finish appears uniform and free from major flaws, and the panel fit is consistent with the model’s structural integrity. The soft top remains waterproof, although it may need replacing in time. A factory hardtop is included with the car, providing versatility for seasonal driving.
Inside, the interior has been renewed. The front seats and door panels are finished in fresh leather, and the carpets have been replaced. Gauges and instruments are functional. The cabin presents as neat, complete, and well-maintained, consistent with the rest of the car’s overall condition.
The 230 SL was introduced in 1963 as the successor to both the 190 SL and the 300 SL, offering a combination of elegance, performance, and safety that was unique at the time. Its Paul Bracq-designed body with a distinctive concave “Pagoda” hardtop quickly became iconic. Under the bonnet, the fuel-injected 2.3-litre inline-six offered both smooth power delivery and robust durability. The car featured innovative safety concepts, such as a rigid passenger cell and crumple zones, making it one of the most forward-thinking convertibles of its time.
Over the years, the W113 series has built a strong reputation among collectors and enthusiasts for its style, engineering, and usability. Unlike some earlier or more exotic classics, the 230 SL is known for being a relatively easy classic to own, with strong parts support and a solid international community. This example combines original drivetrain components with thoughtful mechanical enhancements that improve real-world driving, making it suitable for both showing and touring.
This well-maintained SL is a fine opportunity to acquire a ready-to-use, documented classic with the right balance of originality and practical upgrades.
