  • Restored example of the first-generation luxury SUV

  • Original color scheme: blood orange with ivory accents
  • Extensive mechanical overhaul including brakes, suspension, ignition and fuel system
  • Valid technical inspection certificate

The seller offers for sale a 1978 Jeep Wagoneer, a restored early example of what would become one of the pioneers of the luxury SUV segment. This classic station wagon is powered by a robust 5,815 cc V8 engine and features a 3-speed automatic transmission. It is equipped with selectable four-wheel drive, freewheeling front hubs, power steering, a roof rack, and a tow bar, making it well-suited for both utility and leisure.

The restoration was both cosmetic and mechanical. The underside was derusted and treated, and the exterior was refinished in its original blood-orange color with ivory accents. The body received a Raptor-liner style coating on the roof, adding durability. The floor inside the vehicle was also repainted in the original color using a similar protective coating.

Mechanically, this Wagoneer has been overhauled. The automatic transmission was flushed and reconditioned, and the braking system was renewed with new front and rear brakes, a new master brake cylinder, and some new brake lines. Suspension work includes new shock absorbers. The ignition system has also been refreshed with a new distributor and spark plugs, and an electronic fuel pump has been installed. The exhaust system was updated with a new tailpipe, and the transfer case and U-joints received new seals.

The paint and body are rated as fair to good. Some standard bodywork and potential cosmetic repairs may still be necessary depending on the buyer’s expectations. However, the core structure and exterior finish appear largely intact and functional. The interior has been refurbished with new seat covers, carpets, seat belts, and headliner. The cabin presents cleanly, with only minor signs of age or wear.

Technically, the car is reported to be solid, in roadworthy condition and the car currently holds a valid technical inspection certificate.

The Jeep Wagoneer is widely regarded as the original luxury SUV. Introduced in the early 1960s by Kaiser-Jeep and later produced under American Motors and Chrysler, the Wagoneer brought unprecedented levels of comfort, refinement, and style to the rugged off-road world. It was the first 4×4 vehicle to offer an automatic transmission and independent front suspension in its early form, and by the late 1970s, the Wagoneer had evolved into a premium family vehicle with leather interiors, power options, and woodgrain trim.

The 1978 model sits in the middle of the pre-Grand Wagoneer era, blending vintage charm with reliable mechanicals. Its boxy shape, chrome details, and capable drivetrain made it a favorite among American families looking for adventure and utility in one package. Over time, the Wagoneer became a cult icon, particularly in its later Grand Wagoneer iterations of the 1980s. Today, early models like this 1978 version are appreciated for their classic American styling and analog simplicity.

With interest in vintage 4x4s rising, a restored and mechanically sound Wagoneer such as this one offers a unique opportunity. It captures the spirit of American open-road exploration while offering practicality and timeless appeal. As SUVs dominate the modern landscape, the Wagoneer reminds us where it all began.
