By 1962, Ford introduced the Sport Roadster package, which added a fiberglass tonneau cover, wire wheels, and special badging. Though resembling a two-seater, the cover could be removed to reveal a rear bench, combining visual appeal with practicality. While some owners removed the tonneau permanently, it remains a sought-after feature today. Period advertising leaned heavily into the car’s premium positioning—marketed not just as a performance car but as a status symbol. It found favour with celebrities and was even chosen as the pace car for the 1961 Indianapolis 500.
The Thunderbird’s advanced features for the time included power-operated accessories, swing-away steering wheel, and elaborate trim detailing. It was also one of the first cars to be offered with factory-installed seat belts and was available with an impressive list of comfort options. Today, the 1961–1963 Thunderbird is valued for its distinct design and solid build quality.
