The seller offers for sale this original 1978 Ford Escort MK2 RS 2000, originally delivered new in the Netherlands. The car has been owned for an extended period by the current seller and has been rebuilt and prepared specifically for participation in recreational rally events. While it is not in concours condition, it represents a solid base that has been thoroughly modified and maintained for motorsport use. The owner has competed successfully in this car within its class. Since its last inspection, the car has barely been driven, with mileage standing at 71,171 km in January 2020. Nonetheless, it has been kept well-maintained and serviced. The bodywork, paint, and interior are still in good overall condition, maintained with a focus on functionality and durability. As a result, there are some signs of use and age-related wear. Technically, the car operates well, having received periodic maintenance and conforming to applicable Dutch inspection standards, with light modifications.
The exterior is finished in a white single-stage paint with a matte black hood. Originally delivered new in yellow, the car was fully resprayed in its current colour at an earlier stage. The newer paintwork shows some minor usage traces but presents a tidy appearance consistent with the car’s rally-oriented purpose. It is free from major scratches or significant damage. The matte black hood and bodywork are adorned with various stickers, including an authentic RS2000 decal.
The interior is in well-kept condition and partially updated for rally use. It features a red FIA-approved OMP roll cage, TRS 4-point harnesses, an aluminium pedal set, a custom-made aluminium centre console with a start button and master power switch, Brantz 2 tripmaster, dual digital clocks, Terra Phonenumber, triple timer, storage nets and other elements designed for rally preparation. The original black fabric Recaro sport seats are still present, showing only light signs of use, and remain free of tears or significant damage, maintaining an overall good appearance. The rear seat is finished in matching colour and material and remains in good condition. The rear compartment is neatly finished. Door and side panels are in black vinyl (skai) and remain in original condition, fitted with luggage nets. The carpet is in good original condition, and the headliner, finished in black vinyl, is free from tears or damage. The dashboard is in good shape, with instruments matching original specifications. A sports steering wheel is fitted and is in good condition, and all controls are complete and functional.
Mechanically, the car is described as generally reliable. Lights and indicators function properly, and the car has a valid Dutch technical minspection certificate.
Ford’s Escort RS 2000 MK2 holds a strong reputation among enthusiasts and collectors as one of the icons of Ford’s performance range during the 1970s. Introduced as part of the second-generation Escort line-up, the RS 2000 was built to bridge the gap between the more basic models and the full rally-spec RS1800. Its hallmark was the 2.0-litre Pinto four-cylinder engine, offering solid performance and excellent tuning potential. The RS 2000 gained popularity not only for its road performance but also as a favourite platform for motorsport, particularly in rallying, where it proved agile and robust.
In the European market, the MK2 RS 2000 distinguished itself with its signature “droop snoot” front design and practical yet sporty interior appointments. Although the RS 2000 offered a spirited drive, it remained a relatively accessible sports model, making it popular with drivers looking for an engaging car without the high costs of more exotic competitors. Over the years, the RS 2000 became a highly sought-after classic, prized both for its nostalgic rally pedigree and the pure driving experience it delivers.
Surviving examples, especially those that have been actively maintained and kept in functional rally condition, are treasured by enthusiasts who appreciate the model’s blend of simplicity, mechanical feel, and its connection to the golden era of European motorsport. Even today, RS 2000s remain frequent participants in historic rallies and classic car events, continuing to showcase Ford’s 1970s engineering prowess and motorsport heritage.
